Will Mumps Cause Infertility

by ANTONY
(PAROLI)

Hi

I am 30 years old, my wife is 28, we got married 3 years ago. Still now, my wife cannot conceive. We are consulting one doctor at my place. After testing doctor told us that,my wife has got pco, Doctor advised us to go for IUI after laparoscopy. Lap is over and we are trying IUI procedures. Even after 2 IUI's, my wife has not got conceived.

my semen analysis results shows, 120 millions/ml as count, 85% motility and 70% after one hour. morphology : normal.

I was affected by mumps at the age of 16, I don't know that mumps may affect the fertility. Now only I have read in net. with the above semen analysis results, can my wife conceive. Please suggest me some idea.

Hi Antony

Although Mumps can be associated with infertility in men, infertility occurs in only around 20% of cases. Your sperm analysis seems good, the count is high, motility seems fairly good, and morphology (shape of the sperm) is normal. So you shouldn't really have problems with your sperm fertilising your wife's egg.

You state that your wife has PCO, do you mean PCOS (poly-cystic ovary syndrome)? If this is the case, then is your wife on some form of medication to try and produce ovulation?

IUI is a good idea for someone with PCOS as it deposits a large amount of sperm right into the uterus ( a larger amount of sperm than there would be during intercourse) but it will only work if the woman is sure she will ovulate. The pregnancy success rate for an ovulating woman trying IUI is around 15%.

PCOS is normally due to a hormone imbalance, and this means that the woman may not ovulate every month. Please read my page: Getting pregnant with PCOS.

Hope this helps, and good luck for the future.
