Why Can't I Get Pregnant?

Many women all around the world ask this very same question: 'Why can't I get pregnant?' The truth of the matter is, that there can be many different reasons.

At our most fertile period in life (around our 20's) when everything is still in perfect working order, we women only have a 25 - 30% chance of getting pregnant. That is if we are at the peak of physical fitness, follow a sensible diet, and do everything right! The older we get, the slimmer the chances of getting pregnant.

Women that have problems getting pregnant normally tend to think that it's their fault, this is not always the case. Men too can have problems in the fertility department (it's just they normally don't like to think this!)

Why can't I get pregnant - Basic facts

  • If you are in your 20's, the average time for conceiving is approx 5 months. This doesn't mean that you will get pregnant in this time, it's just an average count.

  • You really should give it 12 months before you start getting worried and saying "Why can't I get pregnant!"

  • As you get older, your chances of conceiving get lower. If you are over 35 and haven't conceived in 6 months, make an appointment to see your doctor.

  • One in seven couples will have a problem getting pregnant. This doesn't necessarily mean that they will never have a baby, just that they may need some form of help to conceive.

  • 90% of couples trying to get pregnant will conceive within 2 years.

But... why can't I get pregnant!

After a year of trying to conceive with no results, it might be worth talking to a healthcare professional. There may be a medical reason why you are having problems getting pregnant.

Let's have a look at some of the more common fertility problems.

  • Poor egg quality, this is more common in older women.

  • PCOS, polycycstic ovary syndrome. Hormone problems can make ovulation irregular or non existent.

  • Fibroids - a fibroid is a growth (normally non-cancerous) that can grow in or around the uterus.

  • PID, pelvic inflammatory disease. Blocked or damaged tubes.

  • Sexually transmitted diseases.

  • Previous ectopic pregnancy.

  • Irregular or painful periods.

  • Some chronic illnesses such as, cancer, diabetes or thyroid disease (there are more, and if you do have a serious illness you should speak to your doctor)

  • Previous and recurrent miscarriage.

  • Being underweight or overweight.

If you have any of the above fertility problems, it does not mean that you will never conceive, just that it may take longer than average. You may also need some medical help to get pregnant.

If you have been trying to get pregnant for a while, maybe your doctor has given you the 'unexplained infertility' results. Dr Irena Webster may just be able to help. Male fertility problems

Sometimes it can be a male problem that will stop conception from taking place.

  • Low sperm count or problems with sperm mobility.

  • Abnormal shaped sperm.

  • Blocked tubes. Yes the guys can suffer from this problem too.

  • Sperm allergy. Although this is quite rare, there are times when men or women can have a reaction to sperm. This causes your body to produce antibodies which in effect will kill the sperm.

Women tend to think that if they are having problems conceiving, then they will never have a baby. This is untrue, and medical treatment can help.

Some couples will chose not to go to their doctor if they cant get pregnant, testing can be evasive and some people prefer not to go down this road.

There are alternative methods of trying to help conception. Some herbal medication can be used to help fertility. Hypnosis is another form of alternative treatment. Do research out any treatment you intend to try. Disappointment will be greater if you believe something is a miracle cure, and it doesn't work.
