The Timeline Of Fetal Development

The timeline of fetal development starts from when the egg is fertilized. One tiny cell will develop and multiply forming a new life.

At first the new life is called an embryo, then after around 3 months it becomes a fetus, and finally onto a fully formed baby.

In these first 3 months some amazing things will happen, your baby will start to form fingers and toes, her heart and lungs will start to form. Towards the end of the first trimester at around 9 weeks, your baby will start to develop her facial features. The second trimester brings a whole new phase in the timeline of fetal development. You may now 'feel pregnant' Your baby, now a fetus and no longer an embryo, is growing rapidly and starting to look more like a baby! In this second trimester she will start to hear sounds and may well respond to light being shone on your tummy. Sometime around 20 weeks, maybe before or after, you will start to feel your baby move. The third trimester begins at week 27. The timeline of fetal development is spent growing bigger, and major organs are maturing ready for the birth. So right from embryo fetal development, through to a fully formed baby takes around 40 weeks. Each week bringing something new, and you a little closer to meeting and holding your baby for the very first time!
