The Shettles Method
And Other Preconception Gender Selection

The Shettles method of gender selection mixes together a whole heap of theory's on baby sex selection.

Dr Landrum B Shettles is the famous author of the book 'Choosing the sex of your baby', but he was also a pioneer in infertility treatment, and was one of the first people to experiment with out of body conception. Dr Shettles founded the method of IVF known as GIFT, 'gamete intrafallopian transfer'. GIFT is a very similar process to IVF, but rather than an embryo being placed into the mothers uterus, the sperm and egg are placed directly into the fallopian tubes. Hopefully then fertilization will occur naturally.

Enough background history, let's get back to the 'Shettles method'

There are a lot of concepts to understand when applying Shettles to your baby making regime, and we will take a brief look at some of them here. One thing to remember is nothing is 100% guaranteed, and Dr Shettles claimed the success rate of his book was around 75% - 90% (rather a large margin for error!)

Shettles method - Know your sperm!

X and Y sperm bearing different properties was the theory with most of Dr Shettles work. The Y sperm that produces a male baby, is faster but fragile and doesn't live as long as the X sperm.

X sperm, produces a female baby, it is slower, but much more resilient and will outlive its Y sperm counterpart.

For the different parts to the Shettles preconception gender selection method, you must learn to predict the time that you will ovulate. Either by using BBT, basal body temperature, or with ovulation prediction kits.

Using The Shettles method, let's see a few tips on making a baby with the gender of your choice.

To try for a boy

  • Douching, the vagina needs to be as alkaline as possible. (Douching is now linked to vaginal infections, and should be discussed with your GP first)

  • Alter your bodies PH balance naturally using diet techniques.

  • Do not let the father ejaculate during the 4-5 days leading up to ovulation.

  • The best time to have sex when trying for a boy is 12 hours before ovulation.

  • Only have sex once, on the day of ovulation.

  • The father should wear loose underwear to keep his scrotum cool.

  • The sperm count needs to be high.

  • Tell the 'dad to be' to drink one or two cups of coffee half an hour before having sex!

  • Tell your partner that you have to have an orgasm! That should get him worried! (the theory is that female orgasm produces more alkaline mucus, which is what the male sperm needs)
If it's a girl that you want

  • Douching. This time the vagina needs to be more acidic.

  • Diet techniques again, this time altering the bodies PH balance to more acidic quantities.

  • You and your partner should have sex right up until 2-4 days before ovulation, and then not again until 3 days after ovulation has occurred (and only then with a condom)

  • The mother shouldn't drink caffeine.

  • OK ladies, no orgasm if it's a baby girl that you want! (No big change then! Sorry guy's only joking!)

  • You should use the missionary position with man on top.

These are only just basics of the Dr Shettles method, and people who have read the book cover to cover have reported varied success rates. The book can be purchased from most good book stores, # ISBN-10: 038548562X# ISBN-13: 978-0385485623

Other natural gender selection methods

The good thing about the Shettles method is that it has been around for so long (almost 40 years) That people have read it and tried it, and adapted it to their own means.

There are also a lot of e books available for download using some of the methods outlined above.

Ashley spencer natural gender selection One great e book that I have found, which is claimed to have a 94.8% success rate, is by a lady called Ashley Spencer. After studying a course and thoroughly researching more natural gender selection methods, she came up with an easy 3 step method. Using herself as a trial subject, she realised it worked!

Her family and friends also tried out her easy to follow plan, and were amazed by the results. After starting to get phone calls from desperate people, she decided to put it all in a book.

On her site you can view testimonies (including a video testimony) from women who have used her preconception gender selection method, and also a testimony from Dr. Michael Smith of the Raleigh, NC Women's Clinic.
