Pregnancy Implantation Bleeding

early development of foetus Pregnancy implantation bleeding normally occurs before your period is due. This could be a week to a few days before your period would actually start. If the spotting is very close to when you would begin your period, then it may just be arriving a little early this month. Especially if it starts off quite light, and then progresses to heavier bleeding.

Lots of women believe that they are having implantation bleeding, when it's actually nothing more than a little spotting between periods, or your period is starting a little earlier than normal. If you spot between periods frequently, then you should make an appointment to see your GP or health advisor.

Normally the implantation blood is different to what your normal menstrual blood is like. It might be pinkish or brownish colour, and is more like a discharge. It could just be spotting or it could be very light.

Why do we see implantation bleeding?

If you have had sex around the time of ovulation and the egg has been fertilized, it will then travel along the fallopian tube to the uterus, and implant into the lining. This will normally happen around 6 - 8 days after ovulation.

The blood that you see, either the spotting or slight discharge is just tiny portions of the uterus lining being dislodged as the egg settles in and gets comfy! Implantation bleeding is nothing to worry about. It doesn't mean that there is something wrong. 20 - 30% of women will experience this symptom of very early pregnancy.

Some women will experience pregnancy implantation bleeding with one pregnancy, but not with others. While other women will experience this with all of their pregnancies, on the flip side, some women will never have implantation bleeding with any pregnancy.

What other symptoms can go along with implantation bleeding?

Early pregnancy symptoms are very similar to the feeling you get when you are about to start your period.

  • You may find your breasts feel sore or tender.

  • You may feel that achy feeling in your lower abdomen, like your are just about to start your period.

  • You may feel very tired, fatigue is a common symptom of early pregnancy.

  • Nausea, early pregnancy can give you that sickly feeling!

  • Headaches are another highly reported symptom of pregnancy.
