Preconception Gender Selection

preconception gender selection

What is preconception gender selection? It's certainly quite a mouthful and a bit of a tongue twister, it could also be mistaken for something much more technical than what it actually means.

Pre-conception gender selection means that you select or decide on the gender (sex) of your baby before you conceive. While you are trying to get pregnant, you will be trying for either a girl or a boy, not just trying for a 'baby'.

Medical methods of preconception gender selection

There are various methods of choosing the sex of your baby. Some involve medical procedures and some don't.

  • Microsort, by far the easiest of assisted conception methods, but with only average results. This process can all be carried out in a few hours, depending on whether the mother is ovualting and the quality of the fathers sperm sample.

  • ICSI teamed together with IVF, this has higher success rates of accurately selecting the gender of your baby. The egg is fertilised with either male or female sperm before being placed into the uterus.

  • PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis) The most accurate of all medical assisted gender selection methods at nearly 100%

(You must be aware that any assisted conception method that uses IVF gives you only a 35-40% chance of becoming pregnant)

Natural methods of preconception gender selection

The Shettles method, the Jonas method and several similar techniques have been around for donkeys years, although I had never heard of them until around 6 months ago when I started to deeply research this topic.

Like myself, not a lot of women know that these methods exist, although due to the success rates getting higher (as certain scientific knowledge is more widely available) Natural methods of gender selection are being used more frequently - with eye opening results. Natural method success rates seem to be slowly overtaking medical assisted methods.

Two women who have studied the scientific aspects of the natural gender selection process are Ashley Spencer and Rebecca Washburn. To see more information from these two 'pioneers' click the links below.

As with most forms of gender selection, very few methods have a 100% success rate, but it's nice to know there are things that you can do 'naturally' to give you a leading edge!
