Implantation Bleeding!!! Help!!

Hi there,
I went to the toilet before going to bed last night and I noticed a brown coloured discharge in my underwear. At first I thought it was the start of my period, but after a while I thought to myself that I never experience brown discharge before my period, I normally just bleed. Also I am not due on until the 7th or 8th of Jan.

So I googled it lol. I searched "what does it mean when you have brown discharge before your period is due". I clicked on your website and read a little about it, and it does sound like what I am experiencing as it is no way like a normal period. I have no pain and I normally suffer bad with pains and I am not bleeding as such. Its just like a bloating, dull ache. Can I have your advice on whether you think it is implantation bleeding or just an abnormal period. Thanx Claire x

Hi Claire

The timing would be about right for implantation bleeding, and the way you describe the bleeding sounds right too.

But there really is no way to say whether it's an abnormal period that may be caused by stress, illness, infection etc, or whether it is implantation bleeding until you have taken a pregnancy test.

If the bleeding does start to get heavier or become bright red, then it could be an early period. If you just continue to spot, or the bleeding stops, I would advise that you wait until the day your period was due, or a couple of days later and then take a pregnancy test.
You can buy pregnancy tests now that will test around a week before your period is due, but if your HGC levels are low, it could give a false negative.

If you do a test and it shows positive, then what you experienced is almost certainly implantation bleeding.

Hope this helps,
Kind regards and Happy new year
Julie :)

Hi thanx for your comment. I visited the doctor as I was worried. It was found out that I was pregnant but unfortunately I was experiencing an early miscarriage.

Hi Claire

Thanks for the update and I'm very sorry to hear that the outcome was a miscarriage.

If you would like to read more about miscarriage, I have written a page about my experience and what you may be feeling, Miscarriage - Why me? or you may want to take a look at getting pregnant after a miscarriage.

I wish you all the best in the future,
Kind regards.
Julie.

14 days on
by: Claire

Hi again.
Your comment was helpful, thanx. I have now had brown spotting for 14 days. On Wednesday I visited the doctor and I was asked to take a blood test to test for rubella. I asked the doctor why and they said that what I have described sounds like the early stages of pregnancy, and that they test for rubella in the first 12 weeks.

Today I woke up to go to work and I felt a bit woozy but just thought I was tired, I went to work and I kept feeling sick and going hot and then cold, then not feeling sick then feeling it again.

As a result I came home from work early as I felt terrible, I got straight in to bed as I was tired and I was aching all over. After a couple of hours lying in bed I went to the toilet and had a bit of blood on my pad, and then when I wiped it was like a stringy bit of brown/red. This was quite long in length. Other than the pain I had from feeling sick I have had no abdominal pain.
should I be worried??

Hi Claire,

Can I ask the reason why you visited your doctor? Did the doctor perform a pregnancy test? Or had you taken a home test? I can't understand why the doctor would test you for Rubella, without testing for pregnancy. And you haven't stated that you are pregnant?

Without knowing whether you were pregnant or not, it is hard for me to comment. I would suggest going back to your doctor, especially if you feel ill. If you are pregnant, then you may still be pregnant. Unfortunately though, there is no way to stop a miscarriage if it is going to happen.

I can only give my advice based on my experience, when I suffered from a miscarriage I had spotting for a while first, which then turned into a full bleed. With the bleeding I experienced abdominal cramps, rather like period pain, but no sickness, fatigue, temperature changes or other symptoms.

The symptoms that you explain, sound more like a virus, or infection. The going hot and cold, sounds like a temperature. If you do think that this is connected to 'the spotting' or maybe pregnancy (if you are pregnant) then do visit your doctor.

Sorry I can't be of more help Claire, but I do think that you should get proper medical assistance with this.

I wish you the very best of luck,

Julie.
