How Do I Get Pregnant? Know How To Time It Just Right!
"How do I get pregnant?!" Every month thousands of women scream this very question. Despite what you were always warned in our teens, about how easy getting pregnant is. It seems as soon as you want to conceive, it doesn't always happen as soon as you would like! Despite what some people may think, baby conception (or in other words, getting pregnant) isn't that easy! A few tips on 'how to get pregnant' could help you on your way to being a mother. So where shall we start?
How do I get pregnant? - Know the best time for conception!
The best place to start is to look at your own monthly cycle. How long does it last? The average time is 28 days, but for others it can be less or more. Figure out when your next period is due, and then count back 12 - 16 days. The idea is that you will ovulate roughly around 12-16 before your next period begins. So if you have a 28 day cycle, you will normally ovulate around 14 days after your last period. This cannot be guaranteed though, and for women with longer or shorter cycles, it may be worth investing in an ovulation kit. In fact it may be worth getting a kit even if you have a very regular cycle, that way you will know for definite when you are ovulating. There are some signs that your body may give out too, these can be pointers to ovulation taking place, or just about to take place, it's your body's way of telling you when and how to get pregnant!
How do I get pregnant? - Know your body's signals
Some women will experience certain signs that they are about to ovulate, reminding you that this is the best time for baby conception, so keep track of what your body is telling you by noting down changes in a diary, or you could make yourself a chart. - Your cervical mucus may change. Cervical mucus normally acts as a barrier against baby conception. But just before ovulation, when your body starts releasing more oestrogen, the mucus becomes clear and slippery (sometimes quite stretchy), it has been described by women as feeling like raw egg white. When the mucus changes to this form, it is no longer acting as barrier and helps the sperm to gain access into the cervix.
- A slight rise in body temperature, although this is so slight that you will need a BBT thermometer to spot it. After ovulation you body will start to release the hormone progesterone, this causes the rise in temperature. Some women who really struggle to get pregnant can follow a plan using a BBT thermometer to track their monthly cycle and try to predict when ovulation will occur. Find out more about tracking your
basal body temperature.
- Some women will feel a slight discomfort, or may twinges of pain when ovulation occurs. This normally happens when the ovaries release the egg. This can last from a few hours, to as little as a few minutes.
- Your breasts may feel tender.
- You may have an increase in your sex drive (your body's way of saying "yeah, let's do it!")
- You may feel an increase in energy levels.
So while you're busy wondering "How do I get pregnant?" - Listen to what your body is trying to tell you!
How to get pregnant - Know when to have sex!
The next item on our list of 'how do I get pregnant tips' The major thing to know here is that once you have ovulated, your egg will only last for around 24 hours (not a lot of time!) Sperm can live for 3 to 5 days. So timing is crucial. The best idea is to have sex before ovulation, having sex after ovulation may work, but you're running out of time. If you have sex 2 days before ovulation, you may have more chance of becoming pregnant than having sex on the day of ovulation. The sperm need to be ready and waiting for when your egg come comes along, and they have quite a journey ahead of them. Some people will tell you to have sex every 2 or 3 days, that way you won't miss ovulation, and there are always sperm around to fertilize the egg when it is released. The main goal (as well as how to get pregnant) is to relax and have fun. If you are too tense or stressed about trying to get pregnant, the less chance there is of it happening. I learned that after 3 years of trying! One last piece of advice - This is the one that worked for me after 3 years of screaming "How do I get pregnant?!" Have sex first thing in the morning, This is reportedly when sperm is at it's 'best'!
Now you know the best time to get pregnant, let's have a look at the
best positions you can use to get pregnant.
Just a few more baby conception tips
Before even thinking "How do I get pregnant?" There are a few things that you should do first. You should be taking folic acid, if you're not, then go to your pharmacy and get some now. Folic acid helps to decrease the risk of serious birth defects. You should take it from when you first plan to get pregnant, up until about your 12th week of pregnancy. Stop smoking, drinking and don't take any recreational drugs. All of this increases the risk of problems through pregnancy, and can cause serious problems for your unborn child. Get fit and healthy, or at least try to eat a sensible diet. If you are overweight, you could try to lose weight before you get pregnant. If you are underweight this can cause problems too, so try to gain a little weight. Cut down on caffeine. Coffee, tea and certain other drinks that contain caffeine can all stop your body from absorbing iron. Too little iron during pregnancy can make you anaemic. Try to avoid using vaginal deodorants and sprays, these can make your vagina a hostile place for sperm, decreasing your chances of becoming pregnant. Be careful when using lubricants during sex, try to use natural lubricants that work in harmony with your body, not against it.
