Getting Pregnant With PCOS

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Getting pregnant with PCOS can be a very long winded process. PCOS or polycystic ovary syndrome is found in approx 70% of women who experience ovulation problems. PCOS is caused by imbalanced hormones which results in the ovary's not properly producing the egg. Although an egg may grow each month, it never properly matures. This along with high luitenizing levels means that egg never bursts free of the ovary but instead remains on the ovary and will turn to a cyst.

Some women with PCOS may never ovulate, while others may only ovulate once or twice a year, although every womans PCOS is different.Obviously with very irregular periods, or for some women no period at all, PCOS and pregnancy rarely occurs.

Is it true that if you have PCOS, pregnancy will never happen?

No... getting pregnant with PCOS can happen. Your GP will advise you of treatments available, one of these may be to try and achieve a certain amount of weight loss (if you are overweight to start with) as this sometimes can stimulate ovulation.

Other treatments available include the use of Clomid. Clomid also known as Clomiphene can help with the production of FSH, helping to correct the underlying hormone imbalance. Other types of medication are also available if Clomid is deemed as not suitable.

PCOS pregnancy treatment can also include a procedure known as LOD (Laparoscopic Ovarian Diathermy) This type of treatment uses a laser to burn away parts of the ovaries. This can then correct the imbalance in hormones.
