Your fertile days to conceive may not be quite as many as you think. When we think of 'fertile days', we tend to think plural as in 'days'. The truth is more hours, than days!
Determining fertile days is something that should be taken seriously if you're trying to get pregnant (or in some cases trying to avoid pregnancy) You should try and study your menstrual cycle and determine when you will ovulate. Ovulation occurs when your ovaries release a viable egg. This egg will travel along fallopian tubes, waiting to be fertilized by any sperm that it may come across.
In a perfect 28 day menstrual cycle, which not many of us have, ovulation would typically occur on day 14. In this case your most fertile days would be a couple of days before ovulation, and on the day of ovulation itself. Why? well because sperm can live for around 72 hours, but your egg will only live for around 12 to 24 hours.
If you want to get pregnant then you need to have sex around the time of ovulation as these are your most fertile days. Ovualtion normally happens 14 days before your period begins, not 14 days into your cycle like many women believe. Obviously you may not have that perfect 28 cycle, Some women's menstrual cycles vary each month, anything from 25 days to 35 days, so it is hard to tell when that 14 days before your period actually is! so what should you do?
You could go to an expert, with dates and times of your recent menstrual cycles. From these dates and other certain criteria that will be requested, a special conception plan will be drawn up for you. This conception plan will give you key dates and times when you will have your most fertile days of the month. These are the days when you will be most likely to conceive. This is exceptionally handy for women with irregular menstrual cycles, as you don't have to try and keep track of when you will ovulate, the expert will calculate this for you. One way of doing this is by the Conception action pack.

There are many ways that you can try and track ovulation. Using basal body temperature charting, keeping an eye on changes in your body such as breast tenderness, cervical mucous and slight abdominal cramping that some women feel during ovulation (some women can just 'feel' their most fertile days - So listen to your body!) You could also buy an ovulation kit. These can be purchased fairly cheaply, or you can buy more accurate - expensive kits.
When you know the day you will ovulate then your most fertile days to conceive are a couple of days before that, and the day of ovulation. So if you want to get pregnant have sex on these days. If you have sex a day or two before ovulation the chances are that some of the sperm will still be alive and may be waiting in the fallopian tubes for your egg to come floating past!
