Ectopic Pregnancy Treatment

Once you have been diagnosed, you will be told about ectopic pregnancy treatment.

The treatment for ectopic pregnancy will depend on how far along the pregnancy is. If there is a ruptured tube, then you will more likely need surgery.

You may have surgery to try and preserve the fallopian tube. Sometimes the surgeon will be able to remove just the ectopic pregnancy and the fallopian tube will be left intact. If this happens then there is an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy again in the future, but it also leaves the chance of a normal pregnancy as well (and a slightly higher chance of conceiving)

Your ectopic pregnancy treatment may involve taking the drug methotrexate. This helps to destroy the pregnancy. If the surgeon or consultant tries this method, they are trying to prevent surgery.

It might be possible to remove the ectopic surgery through keyhole surgery. Sometimes the tube may have to be removed as well if there is irreparable damage.

After ectopic pregnancy treatment - What are the chances of future pregnancies

You can still continue to ovulate after an ectopic pregnancy, even if you have had a fallopian tube removed. Although this halves your chances of conception. If your fallopian tube was saved, your chances of pregnancy are slightly higher than if the tube was removed.

When should you try to concieve again?

You should really wait for about 3 months before trying for another baby. You body will need time to recover, and you will also need time to recover emotionally as well. Losing a baby through any complication will take time to heal. You may be scared of becoming pregnant again. If at all in doubt talk a medical professional first.

Talk things over with your partner, they may be worried about your welfare and health when trying for another baby. As well as having their own emotional feelings, and coming to terms with losing your baby.

As soon as you think you are pregnant again, you should really see your doctor straight away. The same goes if you have any symptoms which are the same as you had in your previous ectopic pregnancy.
