Early period or pregnancy?

by Sarah Kate
(Utah)

Hi,

I had sex with my boyfriend about a month ago, a couple days after I ended my period. It was unprotected, but didn't last that long. I took Plan B the next morning. About a week or 2 later, I started what seemed like my period. I bled bright red and clotty blood for about 4-5 days and experienced cramping (everything i usually get in a period). I took this as Plan B messing with my hormones and my period coming early. My doctor even said that's what it could be. I should be starting my period any time now, within the next 2 weeks. I'm starting to get PMS symptoms and just last night and this morning noticed a light brown color when I wiped. Also, I'm bleeding small amounts of bright red blood. Could I have implantation bleeding and be pregnant? Or am I about to start my next period? Plan B can really mess with your hormones (from what I've heard).

Thanks,
Curious Kate

Hi Sarah,

If you have already spoken to your doctor, I would suggest that you take his/her advice, as your doctor will have come across this sort of problem before. Plan B is an emergency contraception and there for will contain high doses of levonorgestrel. Any high dose of hormone can lead to side effects. Plan B's website actually states "Side effects may include changes in your period, nausea, lower abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, and dizziness"

I would seriously doubt that you are pregnant, but these things do happen even against all the odds. I would be more inclined to watch for ectopic pregnancy.
Ectopic pregnancy symptoms.

If you are concerned at all about the bleeding, or if you have any bad pain, then you should really go back to your doctor.

'Morning after contraceptives' should never be relied on as a type of birth control, you are much better to arrange a suitable birth control before having a physical relationship.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards
Julie
