What a great question - Is there a best position to get pregnant?

In truth, there haven't been enough studies carried out to give a definite answer to this question. But many women believe that certain positions will give nature a helping hand in conception.

Looking at it from a logical point of view, sperm have to swim upwards to reach your egg. Now there are a few million of these little guys that will be released by your partner when you have sex. So hazarding a guess, I would think at least a few will make it up to the fallopian tubes. Then again, you won't do them any harm by giving them a head start.

Some women will argue that there is no specific best position for getting pregnant, but if you're one of the many women who are struggling to get pregnant, then anything is worth a try.

Conception positions - Fact or fiction?

As mentioned before, sperm have an upward journey to complete. So positions where you are lying down will be most favourable. This also places the sperm closer to the cervix.

Your partner on top, this is known as the missionary position and your partner can control how deep the sperm are deposited.
Side by side, you could be facing each other, or use the spoon position where you face away from your partner and he enters you from behind. Deep penetration can be gained this way depositing sperm close to the cervix.
Kneeling or 'doggy style', also bending over, all of these positions offer deep penetration, meaning sperm can be ejaculated near to the cervix.
Positions that are said to be 'not good' are, woman on top and standing up. In theory gravity will be working against the sperm.
After sex try lying with a pillow under your hips for 15 to 30 minutes or so, this will help the sperm along through the cervix.
As well as positions to have sex, when you have sex could also help. Have sex in the morning, it is believed that a man's sperm count is at its best first thing!
No matter what position you use, you must also take care if using any lubricants, some of these will work against sperm. Try to get a totally natural lubricant that works along with your body.

Crazy as this may sound, do not douche after sex (yes, some women still do it!) The only thing that will happen with douching is that you will wash some of the sperm away. You are also making your vagina an uninhabitable place for sperm, as douching can alter the natural PH balance.

One main point to remember is to keep sex fun and relaxed. If you're too tense and stressed about getting pregnant, then sex will become more of a chore than a good experience.

There is no proof that if you climax after the sperm has entered your vagina, that you are more likely to get pregnant. Although some women believe that the small and painless contractions caused by orgasm, will waft the sperm upwards through the cervix into the fallopian tubes (plus it will also be a great ending to a fun activity!)

Most advice states that if you are under 30 and you haven't managed to conceive in 12 months of trying, then you should make an appointment with your doctor. The average chance of getting pregnant each month (even if you are doing everything right, from diet to using the best position to get pregnant) is only around 25% to 30%, this of course drops as you get older.
