The Baby Names Game!

Choosing a name for your baby can be a right headache! - Here are a few tips

When you're pregnant there are so many choices to be made.Choosing baby names should be a fun part. Sit down with your partner and have a name brainstorming session! Ask friends and family to tell you their favourite names. Look for ideas in all sort of places, magazines, TV, films... there are some adorable baby names out there!

For some people naming their baby is a cut and dried decision, maybe you have a family name that has been passed down the generations,(although don't let family members or friends pressurize you into taking a name!) Maybe you have a name that you've loved for years and years. For others choosing that special name will become an obsession.

Nearly every name you think of will remind you of someone, so if you love the name Jack, but there was a Jack at school that you just didn't get on with... chances are you won't feel comfortable using that name for your beautiful new baby.

Baby name program - Make it easy!

While searching around to see what baby names books are available these days,I discovered a brilliant little program that allows you to speed up the searching and reviewing of the naming process? I wish this was available when my babies were born, it would have made things so much easier! You can check the name by origin, meaning or gender, you can also add your own names, choose your favourites and then print them out (no more writing them all down!) With loads of features, and saving you time, and all of that without wondering which book to buy, take a look at this The baby names dictionary , its a great program that you can run on your own computer, and it also comes with a free gift or two!, Now there's a bargain!

Here are the top 100 most popular baby girls names in the UK in 2006.

For those of you that are struggling to pick a name (like I did) here's a few tips:

Naming your baby

  • Take a look through the top 100 names over the last 5 years.

  • Buy a book of names (or use the program above). Search through the names with your partner and make a list of all the ones that could be a possibility.

  • Look up the meaning of names that you choose.

  • Make a list of your top 5 favourite names, get your partner to do the same thing, this can be quite funny as you will sometimes get totally different names on both lists.

  • Narrow your 2 lists down to one list, make sure it contains names that you both like!

  • When your baby arrives, see if the name suits her, sometimes you can just look at her and think, no that name is not right!

  • Don't be afraid to change your mind, here in Britain we get 42 days to register the birth, so you can change your mind as often as you like before then!
You can take a look here for information on registering your baby's birth in Great Britain, and loads more great info. Well good luck, enjoy researching the names and keep it fun ;-)
