Baby Bedding - To Theme or not To Theme!
Well you have decorated the nursery, bought the furniture, now it's time to decide on baby bedding.
Most parents will start with sheets and blankets for the baby's cot, quilts and bumpers are not supposed to be used until baby is 12 months old. So what sort of material do you want? I loved the brushed cotton or flannelette sheets, they are very soft to touch and nice and snugly for baby. Don't forget that when baby is first born, after spending 9 months floating in fluid, most fabrics can feel very scratchy to her. I would imagine that terry sheets feel a little like sandpaper!
What colours? Whites and creams are always nice for sheets, or plain colours. I had a patterned bottom sheet for Lauren, and I have to say it looked way too 'busy', baby's cot should feel warm and relaxing, not over exciting!
Blankets come in just plain colours, or with patterns. You can get nursery rhyme baby bedding, or abc's, or 123's, as usual the list is endless. If you have decorated a theme in the nursery, then perhaps you could carry this along with the nursery bedding.Fleece blankets really shouldn't be used until 12 months of age according to some experts, as they are warmer than normal blankets and could overheat your baby. If you do use fleece blankets, just keep a check on baby's temperature and make sure that she doesn't get too hot. I used cellular blankets with both Joe and Lauren until they were 12 months, then I switched to a cot quilt.
I loved choosing the cot quilt and bumper for my babies. I don't know why but there's something about that tiny quilt that gives me butterflies!
Most cot quilts are all in one (you can't take the cover off for washing) So it may be a good idea to buy two, then you always have another when the first is being washed.
And again some experts recommend not using a cot bumper after baby can stand. She may decide to climb up it to try and escape from her cot! I never had this problem with either of my children, but please do take care and follow manufacturers guidelines with anything that you buy.
One thing not to forget is the size of the bedding, if you start out with a moses basket or crib, then buy the appropriate fitted sheets for this item. Cot sheets are way to big and you will end up folding them over and over. The same with pram sheets (if you have a pram) Don't forget that the sizes are all different, so measure up and check when buying.
Curtains and tie-backs can all be purchased as matching sets with quilts and bumpers, I've even seen lamp shades thrown in to compliment the baby bedding!
