Baby Conception Tips - Time It Right

Despite what some people may think, baby conception (or in other words, getting pregnant) isn't that easy! A few baby conception tips could help you on your way to being a mother. So where shall we start?

Do you know the best time for conception?

Firstly if you already know all of the ovulation and conception tips, then Dr Irina Webster (a medical doctor) of the women's Health Issues Program (an international educational company for women) may be able to help you more than I can. If you're desperate to get pregnant then see what Dr Irina has to say. Otherwise, continue down the page.

The best place to start is to look at your own monthly cycle. How long does it last? The average time is 28 days, but for others it can be less or more.

Figure out when your next period is due, and then count back 12 - 16 days. The idea is that you will ovulate roughly around 12-16 before your next period begins. So if you have a 28 day cycle, you will normally ovulate around 14 days after your last period. This cannot be guaranteed though, and for women with longer or shorter cycles, it may be worth investing in an ovulation kit. In fact it may be worth getting a kit even if you have a very regular cycle, that way you will know for definite when you are ovulating.

There are some signs that your body may give out too, these can be pointers to ovulation taking place, or just about to take place, and the best time for baby conception.

Baby conception tips - Know your body's signals

Some women will experience certain signs that they are about to ovulate, reminding you that this is the best time for baby conception, so keep track of what your body is telling you.

  • Your cervical mucus may change. Cervical mucus normally acts as a barrier against baby conception. But just before ovulation, when your body starts releasing more oestrogen, the mucus becomes clear and slippery (sometimes quite stretchy), it has been described by women as feeling like raw egg white. When the mucus changes to this form, it is no longer acting as barrier and helps the sperm to gain access into the cervix.

  • A slight rise in body temperature, although this is so slight that you will need a bbt thermometer to spot it. After ovulation you body will start to release the hormone progesterone, this causes the rise in temperature. Some women who really struggle to get pregnant can follow a plan using a bbt thermometer to track their monthly cycle and try to predict when ovulation will occur.

  • Some women will feel a slight discomfort, or may twinges of pain when ovulation occurs. This normally happens when the ovaries release the egg. This can last from a few hours, to as little as a few minutes.

  • Your breasts may feel tender.

  • You may have an increase in your sex drive (your body's way of saying "yeah, let's do it!")

  • You may feel an increase in energy levels.

Advice on getting pregnant - Know when to have sex!

sperm and egg Ok the major thing to know here is that once you have ovulated, your egg will only last for around 24 hours (not a lot of time!) Sperm can live for 3 to 5 days. So timing is crucial.

The best idea is to have sex before ovulation, having sex after ovulation may work, but you're running out of time. If you have sex 2 days before ovulation, you may have more chance of becoming pregnant than having sex on the day of ovulation. The sperm need to be ready and waiting for when your egg come comes along, and they have quite a journey ahead of them.

Some people say have sex every 2 or 3 days, that way you won't miss ovulation, and there are always sperm around to fertilize the egg when it is released.

The main goal is (as well as making a baby!) to relax and have fun. If you are too tense or stressed about trying to get pregnant, the less chance there is of it happening. I learned that after 3 years of trying!

So now you the best time to get pregnant, let's have a look at the best positions you can use to get pregnant.

Just a few more baby conception tips

You should be taking folic acid, if you're not, then go to your pharmacy and get some now. Folic acid helps to decrease the risk of serious birth defects. You should take it from when you first plan to get pregnant, up until about your 12th week of pregnancy.

Stop smoking, drinking and don't take any recreational drugs. All of this increases the risk of problems through pregnancy, and can cause serious problems for your unborn child.

Get fit and healthy, or at least try to eat a sensible diet. If you are overweight, you could try to lose weight before you get pregnant.

Cut down on caffeine. Coffee, tea and certain other drinks that contain caffeine can all stop your body from absorbing iron. Too little iron during pregnancy can make you anaemic.

Try to avoid using vaginal deodorants and sprays, these can make your vagina a hostile place for sperm, decreasing your chances of becoming pregnant.

Be careful when using lubricants during sex, try to use natural lubricants that work in harmony with your body, not against it.

These baby conception tips are not just for us women...

Get your man to wear looser undies like boxer shorts! This will help with his sperm count. Tell him to avoid taking hot baths too, as a hot bath can lower his sperm count. Your man's sperm will be much healthier and happier in a cooler environment!

One last bit of advice on getting pregnant

One thing to remember is that we only have a 25 to 30% chance of getting pregnant every month. There are only 2 or 3 days a month where we can get pregnant. These statistics of course get lower as we get older. If you have been trying to get pregnant for 12 months or over without success, then maybe it is time to discuss things with your partner and make an appointment to see your local GP.

If you want some more great advice and tips on getting pregnant, Beth Kiley has authored her very own book on this subject. After struggling to conceive a baby herself, and dedicating months of research, Beth realised (and this is in her own words) 'There isn't just one big secret to getting pregnant - There are lots of little steps and secrets'

Beth's book can be purchased on-line and the great thing is, it's an e book, so no waiting for the postman to arrive. You can get reading straight the way. Click Here for more details, and a free newsletter jammed solid with info that you should know.
