Acupressure For Labor A Way To An Easier Birth
Maternity acupressure and acupressure for labor has been used for in Asia for thousands of years. Acupressure works on the theory that pain and illness happen when the body's energy flow is somehow disturbed and not able to run normally. Acupressure for labor works by stimulating areas of the body to produce the body's own natural painkillers. It will help you to relax (this is especially helpful for first time mothers who are not sure what to expect during labor and childbirth) Acupressure if used during labor can help with numerous parts of childbirth, from dilating your cervix to helping strengthen contractions and reducing the overall time spent in labor (sounds like a dream come true) All this in turn means less stress for you and your baby. Acupressure can also be used at home to
induce labor.
This aspect also means that certain acupressure techniques must not be used before your due date. If you are considering using acupressure to naturally induce an overdue pregnancy then do talk to your midwife first. All women will experience labor differently. Some will have a higher pain thresh hold than others. The fact is though that labor does hurt, and majority of women will need some kind of pain relief during labor. Acupressure is a great natural pain relief for labor. It means you can stay calm and in control of the birth of your baby. Some medications come with side effects that do not help the labor process to progress smoothly.
Acupressure for labor - The basics
There are several points on the body that can be used as 'maternity acupressure'. Your birth partner can help while you are in labor. - One on the shoulders can help to relieve pain and also helps irritability (which does happen during labor!) tension and fatigue.
- Joining the valley is a point between the finger and thumb, at the highest point of the muscle. This is a great point for pain relief in labor.
- Reaching inside is another acupressure labor point. Located on the outside of the little toe, just around the base of the toenail. This point is helpful for difficult labors, and can also help if your baby isn't positioned correctly.
These are just a few points that help during childbirth. There are of course others. Any attempt at acupressure during pregnancy and childbirth should be done correctly, don't just guess at where the points are. Acupressure is a great natural pain relief for labor, if it wasn't people all over the world wouldn't still be using it! So be prepared, get your partner to know exactly where the correct pressure points are, and you could have a much easier and shorter birth.
